The Hobby
Skilled in carpentry work, Chad Patillo began his business by creating beautiful spoons for his wife and for his friends. These beautiful spoons became sought after and then Chad began to expand his craft to wood bowls, cutting boards, dippers, rolling pins, plates and more…
The Craft
Chad’s exploration into his natural talent for creating hand-crafted began about one year ago. After creating beautiful spoons and such for family and friends, Chad decided to try selling his items at a local craft show.
This opportunity expanded his reach and brought an opportunity for he and his wife to create their own business
The Fig Tree Market
Named after a whimsical Fig tree in their backyard, The Fig Tree Market features his expanding list of handcrafted wood items. These items are not only beautiful but also functional.
The Wood
Made from a variety of wood from walnut, cherry, pecan and more…Chad shares that the grain of the wood and the shape of the wood ‘tell’ him what he will be able to create.
Certain wood such as cherry have beautiful graining that adapt beautifully to handcrafted items.
A Country Life
Chad and Sarah first moved to Sparta following a job relocation for Chad. Both love antiques and historic homes and they found their beautiful home built in 1865 in Sparta. This home, as with many historic homes, became a labor of love and of renovation.
Surrounded by Pecan trees and the Fig Tree Chad and Sarah have a tranquil, rural lifestyle celebrating the new rhythms of their life.

The Future
Following their dream to own a beautiful historic home in a small town, creating their own artisanal business Chad shared that he would love to see this small town become an artist/hand-crafter destination shopping area.
With several other artisans in the community with varied talents, this could be a real possibility.
Favorites
Chad thoroughly enjoys making the bowls! He also loves working with Walnut and Black Walnut wood. Some of the handcrafted items came from repurposing wood from their own yard…old pecan and oak trees that were affected by severe storms.
This brings an additional sense of place and of time to his beautiful handcrafted items.
