Choosing Gray or Greige for Wall Color

Living Room Transformation

It seems I’ve been transforming our home’s rooms one at a time. Last year, I transformed our dining room – to blue. The year before, I transformed our kitchen – creamy beige. This year its the living room transformation I’m working on.

Calming Gray

Is it a reflection of the time of my life? Is it a reflection of what I’m seeking in my life? Perhaps both. As I selected the wall color for our living room, I truly wanted to go a gray or greige. I tested out four colors to which Dearest and our youngest daughter selected their choice. The funny thing is, I pretty much selected this shade when I chose the paint color for the dining room.

Views and Vistas

Our home is a 1914 Craftsman with a pretty open floor plan, with the exception of the kitchen. There’s also a lot of light, from the windows and the French doors leading out from both the dining room and the living room. We have two large picture windows in the living room giving us a wonderful view of the outdoors. Sitting on the couch in the living room – you can pretty much see everything outside.

Painted Walls Painted Furniture

Dearest thought I needed more contrast in the built-ins – so I mixed a few sample paints to create this blue

Transforming the wall color leads to a number of changes in our home – I began with painting some of the furniture, the little side table, the bench and the writing desk.

Next Steps

A few weeks back, I selected a number of fabrics to change the look of the furniture in our home. I plan to slipcover our couch, Dearest’s recliner, and a chair. Other projects will include pillows, reupholstered chairs and the ottoman. We’ve had our furniture for a number of years and would like to keep them for many years to come.

Change in Color, Change in Style

A while back, I did a review on the many ‘Cottage’ styles. I determined that our living room easily fell within the English Cottage style. With this transformation, I’m thinking it will now be more French Country style.

The paint colors:

  • Walls – Valspar Smoked Oyster
  • Ceiling – Valspar Oatlands Taupe
  • Trim – Valspar Asiago

all of the colors are on the same card at Lowes.

What’s next?

  • slipcover couch
  • slipcover recliner
  • slipcover high-back chair
  • reupholster ottoman
  • reupholster side chairs
  • slipcover pillows

Have you considered gray or greige – I’ve been thinking of it for a long time – I do so love this color – I know we’ll enjoy it for a long time to come.
