OTHERS
Lord help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for – Others.
Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true
And know that all I do for you
Must needs be done for – Others.
Let “Self” be crucified and slain
And buried deep; and all in vain
May efforts be to rise again
Unless to live for – Others.
And when my work on earth is done
And my new work in heaven’s begun
May I forget the crown I’ve won
While thinking still of – Others.
Others, Lord, yes others
Let this my motto be
Help me to live for others
That I may live like Thee.
Charles Meigs
When I was young, we often sang the refrain from this powerful hymn. It remains with me until today…I can envision our group of young ladies at college, after our evening devotions singing this refrain.
How often do we forget, when our own situations dominate our thoughts from day to day. The trials, the decisions, the appointments, the expectations – the daily to do lists. We can easily busy our minds with all of the things required from us on a day to day basis. We can easily put ourselves and our needs before others…and this can weigh us down, making us unsatisfied and discontent.
Remember the acronym for Joy?
J – Jesus
O – Others
Y – You
It is so very true. if we take the time to begin our day and to weave within our day thoughts first of Jesus then others – we will find joy. It is when our minds are so full of self that we become discontent. We need to purpose each day to make sure we include time for Jesus and time for others. There’s nothing wrong in making sure we accomplish our 6 Most Important things to do list – but we need to be aware, always, of others.
