Love – The Foundation of All Things We Do

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” I Corinthians 13:13

There are foundations to every good thing.

The foundation of the church is Jesus Christ. It is He whom we base the cause we have in this world to ‘go into all the world…’ to teach, preach, spread the Good News and to become one as a family in God.

The foundation of the spread of the gospels came through the Apostles…they were told to go and to tell everyone and the early church began. The first thing Jesus instructed Peter to do was to ‘love my sheep’. That is, Peter was to love others as Christ did and to take care of them.

There are foundations in what we build, in the creation of the world and in belief systems. Everyone has one…the basis and the beginning of all we do as a Christian, a follower of Christ is to love God first and to love others as we love ourselves.

Love is a Gift

In I Corinthians 13 we find the gifts of the Holy Spirit….

We gain understanding and knowledge…

We gain faith in God…

We are given hope…

We are given a purpose…

But, if we do all these things, without love…our efforts are futile.

What is Love?

According to I Corinthians 13, love is:

  • Patient
  • Kind
  • Forgiving
  • Not jealous
  • Doesn’t boast
  • Not easily angered
  • Doesn’t keep record of wrong doings
  • Rejoices in Truth
  • Love bears all things
  • Love trusts
  • Love hopes
  • Love endures

Love Never Ends…(Falls Short)

Love, the amazing love that comes from God, can work through us and can work through anything! It is such an awesome thought to know that God, who IS love, loves us. Unconditionally. Unreservedly and Completely. All we have to do is to accept that gift of love. In return, we learn, we grow and we emulate that love toward others. When we have been given the most precious gift in the word, salvation. We shouldn’t take it for granted. We should dig deeper to understand it and to understand God.

We should live out each day a reflection of Him – to love others, patiently, kindly, with forgiveness, not jealous, not boastful, not easily angered, rejoicing in truth, hopeful and enduring. This takes practice. This takes being aware of ourselves and of situations. Most importantly, this takes a daily walk with God. Spending time with Him through reading His word and through prayer gives us the strength, wisdom and knowledge to know that love is the foundation of this life that we live.
