“If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” Percy Bysshe Shelley
Each day that passes brings us closer to spring. Isn’t it wonderful how sweet and beautiful the world is in spring? The air is warm and fragrant – the color of newly immerging plants and leaves is soft and bright. But, to experience all this beauty, we must have the winter days.
“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” Edith Sitwell
Wintertime is a marvelous time where we cozy up indoors with our family and friends. We read more, we learn and we create. We contemplate the things we will do in the coming seasons. It is a magical time of dreaming.
“A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things.” George R. R. Martin
Yesterday when I came home the wind was blowing so strong! The wind chimes were singing a marvelous tune. And in our old house doors were swinging slightly as the breeze made it through the walls. Our home is open to the breeze. I actually prefer this, I think a home needs to breathe.
“Surely everyone is aware of the divine pleasures which attend a wintry fireside; candles at four o’clock, warm hearthrugs, tea, a fair tea-maker, shutters closed, curtains flowing in ample draperies to the floor, whilst the wind and rain are raging audibly without.” Thomas de Quincey
I hope where you are that you’re warm and safe. I hope you see the beauty of the wintry world around you and dream of the colors and fragrance of spring not far off.
