I have a new china hutch!
The dining room is taking shape now, the look I had envisioned is coming about! Giving the china hutch French flair with paint added more charm to the room.
My China Hutch Makeover! It is my first Craigslist purchase! I know. Where have I been! It was quite exciting and a little nerve racking! We drove two hours to purchase this – an item of which I only saw one picture and corresponded with the seller twice. As we were driving there I kept thinking, what if I don’t really like it!
Well, I loved it!
I promised my youngest daughter that she could have my current dining set – I’m hoping to find a longer table – our family is growing and I really want a table that could sit 10 to 12 people easily. Also, I wanted a larger china cabinet. This cabinet is perfect! I love the curve of the glass – four doors! I love the pattern on the doors, side and legs.
Planning on Painting the Hutch
Before I even purchased the hutch, I knew I would paint it – give it age, patina and giving it a French flair with paint. Remember my inspiration for Camille – the Little Blue Chest – I kept that patina in mind, but I wanted this to be a little different.
Shades of Gray and of Blue
I used a few shades of blue, gray, silver, lavender and cream.
- I began with a chalk paint gray as the base.
- I then applied a darker gray along the accents getting into each groove.
- I then randomly dry brushed on shades of blue
- on the inside of the cabinet I added more blue and dry brushed lavender and silver.
- My daughter said it reminded her of flowing water from the cartoon, Pocahontas – I like that comparison!
Finishing it Off
After the blue and gray dry brush layer I topped it off with a dry brush layer of cream to soften the look. I taped off around the edges of the center glass doors – to give a little accent to the look. I’m pretty pleased with the results! Another step into completing the dining room transformation is complete. Now I have to figure out what I will display…I’m leaning toward the ironstone and teapots…I’ll probably change things from time to time…you know how that is!
The hutch now adds just the look that I wanted to our blue dining room. I love adding French flair to this room – giving it a sense of time and place. Next I will be painting two chairs with cane back…I’ll reupholster the seats with fabric I almost didn’t pick up from Goodwill! What was I thinking!
