Geraniums – Summer’s Happy Faces
In the spring, Pansies, to me, are the garden’s happy face. In the summer, the glory of Roses, Peonies, Hydrangeas reign, but the happy, genial face belongs to the Geranium.
Our patio in the back gets morning and afternoon shade, it is a perfect place to rest and to reflect on the beauty and gifts of life. A potted red Geranium has graced this table for a couple years – I love the deep red color of this Geranium.
We have a few window boxes I hope to put back up after we finish painting the trim, one of the coziest, welcoming plants you can have whether in a pot on the table or in a window box is a Geranium.
Red Geraniums
Life did not bring me silken gowns,
Nor jewels for my hair,
Nor signs of gabled foreign towns
In distant countries fair,
But I can glimpse, beyond my pane, a green and friendly hill,
And red geraniums aflame upon my window sill.
The brambled cares of everyday,
The tiny humdrum things,
May bind my feet when they would stray,
But still my heart has wings
While red geraniums are bloomed against my window glass,
And low above my green-sweet hill the gypsy wind-clouds pass.
And if my dreamings ne’er come true,
The brightest and the best,
But leave me lone my journey through,
I’ll set my heart at rest,
And thank God for home-sweet things, a green and friendly hill,
And red geraniums aflame upon my window sill.

Summer’s days are quickly passing by. Each moment is filled with wonder from the rising of the sun as the birds sing to the opening of the Morning Glory. The afternoons are still punctuated by rain, for which we are now 14 inches above normal. An amazing notion when we were for years in a drought. It is funny how you see things differently – I hope to always be thankful – no matter what comes in my day.
Just as I am fond of Geraniums – especially red ones, I am also fond of beautiful tea sets – this red Chintz set is a complete delight to my heart.
On that list I would also add good books – gardening books and cookbooks are so much fun to read and to collect. I am quite fond of all of Carolyne Roehm’s books – especially those on flowers and gardening. I do appreciate your visit – I am so very Delighted when you stop by.
