There are a number of vegetable oils that provide different combinations of therapeutic properties. Which oil you choose for your aromatherapy, lotions and scrubs depend upon the therapeutic benefit you’re seeking. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and are also used in natural lotions, scrubs and balms.

Essential Oils are powerful for emotional and physical benefits

Essential Oils

Essential oils are naturally occurring oils in nature. These compounds are found in parts of a plant to include seeds, bark, stems, and flowers. These oils are considered ‘volatile’ because the fragrance compounds change quickly from solid to liquid to gas. Several essential oils have been discovered and have been found to be powerfully affective for emotional and physical wellness applications.

Easy to find ingredients to make Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Scrub

Easy to Find Ingredients

Finding these ingredients for the scrub was much easier than I realized. Pink Himalayan Sea salt can be found in most grocery stores or online in the herb-spice aisle. I did, however, find a large bag of finely ground Pink Himalayan Sea Salt at TJ-Maxx. So, I’m sure similar stores may have them – again in their food aisle. The finely ground salt is what I used. The carrier oils. The Sweet Almond Oil was found at Hobby Lobby and the Jojoba and Avocado Oil at TJ-Maxx in the cosmetics aisle. I did some research on essential oils and selected a collection of oils from Plant Therapy. I found that this selection has a wide variety of essential oils that I can use for these scrubs and much more! The jars I found at Hobby Lobby.

Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub - Sweet Orange

  • 2 cups Pink Himalayan Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Sweet Almond Oil*
  • 1/4 teaspoon Jojoba Oil*
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sweet Orange Essential Oil*

  1. In a large glass bowl combine the Pink Himalayan Salt, Carrier Oil(s) and Essential Oils. Stir together either with a fork or with a spatula until completely combined. The resulting texture is that of wet sand - not too oily.
  2. * you can adjust the levels of carrier and essential oils to your preference. If you'd like a stronger fragrance, continue to add by drops until you're satisfied. Remember, essential oils are strongest when first exposed.
  3. Spoon your salt scrub into wide mouth jars.

Recipe Notes

Sweet Orange Essential Oil is known for its uplifting and calming fragrance. I keep a jar in my bathrooms at the sinks and at the bathtub. I also keep a jar in the kitchen by the sink.

Pink Himalayan Salt Scrubs

Salt Scrub Varieties

Lavender -Tea Tree Oil Salt ScrubEvery one that knows me know how much I LOVE Lavender. So I just had to make a salt scrub with Lavender Essential Oil. I decided to add Tea Tree oil for it’s benefits. Tea Tea Oil helps with the immune system. Lavender is well known for its calming properties. Again, as with the recipe for the Sweet Orange Salt Scrub, apply the essential oils to your preference for fragrance strength.

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Peppermint essential oilI made another variety using Peppermint Essential Oil. This fresh fragrance is invigorating and can improve energy and alertness. I love peppermint oil to sooth my feet when I’m out for a long time. Using this scrub on my and Dearest’s feet helps rejuvenate us at the end of the day.

An update and note about shelf – life for oils. Not all oils are created equal and some lose their freshness and can become rancid. It also helps to make sure your salt scrubs or homemade beauty products are secured in a tight sealed jar. Here are some of the approximate shelf life for different oils: 4 oz. Sunflower Oil – 3-6 months; Castor Oil – one year; Hazelnut Fixed Oil – 3 months; Hemp Seed Oil – 2 years; Grapeseed oil – 6 months. You can read more about rancidity  here.
